Environmental issues such as pollution, resource depletion, rising water levels and others impact us all — but they do not impact us all equally. Communities who may be disproportionally impacted by climate change, pollution, a lack of resources and more are considered Environmental Justice, or EJ, communities. Massachusetts uses data on the number of minorities, the annual median income and the percentage of households who speak English “very well” to determine EJ communities.

Students, Staff, Community Members celebrate Arbor Day at Fitzgerald Park – Facilities

Fitzgerald Park in Mission Hill is close to becoming a level I arboretum, thanks to the help of Northeastern students and staff.

Five new species were planted at the second annual Arbor Day hosted on April 28. Students, Mission Hill residents and volunteers planted trees and celebrated.

Authority board urged to support state-budget housing amendment

The lack of state funding for housing authorities highlighted the local authority board meeting May 18.

Entrepreneurship Club Sustainable Fashion Competition Highlights Student Startups – Facilities

The Northeastern Entrepreneurship Club recently organized a competition on February 25 at Horticulture Hall, where 16 teams showcased their startups related to sustainable fashion. These teams competed for the opportunity to participate in the Boston Hult prize competition. The three judges, Nikki James, Ganish Kolli, and Madhavi Venkatesan provided feedback to the teams.

Students Experience Sustainability in Action on Alternative Spring Breaks – Facilities

Larissa Steiner, a first-year health science major, woke up at 5 a.m. every day during her Spring break. While Northeastern students on the Boston campus may be bundled in their winter coats, students at the Oakland campus are enjoying the sun and everything the Oakland campus has to offer – including a 2.5-acre farm. Recently, the Oakland campus held its spring farm festival, an annual celebration of community and the environment, which was hosted by Farm Manager Julia Dashe and Sustainability Manager Andrew Gonzales.
